Recently, I had the privilege of receiving a personal musical mantra from Mark Romero, a genius at healing through music. When I told him that I sometimes just seize up with worry right when I’m in the middle of amazing flow, Mark reframed it for me:
He asked me to respect my humanity as well as my divinity.
And dang if that didn’t hit my spot.
One of the few traditional coaching tenets I embrace is a teaching from Thomas Leonard: We respect our clients’ humanity above all, especially when things are tough.
For those of us navigating this journey of awakening or service to the world, it’s time for us to extend this deep respect to ourselves.
What does this mean?
It means resting. It means laughing. It means recognizing our own fallibility but forging ahead anyway.
Most of the people I work with know exactly what it feels like to be in the flow.
To feel that sweet life force coursing through us. To feel guided. To be in just the right spot at just the right time.
This feeling manifests things in ways that kind of blow our minds.
However… we also know what it feels like to get knocked into the gutter of self-doubt, discouragement, and fatigue.
Here, some Nasty Questions rear their heads and bare their teeth.
Who do you think you are, trying to teach this stuff?
Who are you to do this work?
And my personal favorite:
Getting too big for your britches, now aren’t you?
Well, ouch. This stuff hurts.
These experiences are evidence that we’re only human. No matter what, all of us are heir to these insecurities.
And really, it’s all okay.
How am I implementing Mark’s wisdom? Time will tell. But I have a few ideas.
In the meantime, a more important question for you to consider is, “How can you respect your own humanity today?”
A few ideas from the land of Intuitive Magic:
- Schedule some downtime. So you’re busy being the next most mindblowing thing since Leonardo da Vinci invented sliced bread and then taught it to fly. The next day, stop being a genius for a little while. Go to the grocery story. Get a cup of tea at a local shop. Read something completely inane. It’ll do you good.
- Set a few boundaries with Spirit. Tired of being woken at 3 a.m. with spiritual work to do? Tired of being taken over by inspiration just when the pasta is al dente and about to go mush? Tell Spirit when you are available to do spiritual work, and when you’re not. Ask with deep love & respect for your guidance and inspiration to come through in timing that works for you, your family, and your life. Then surrender it and see what happens.
- Just Say No to constant availability. Put away your personal connectivity devices and harken back to a time, long ago, when no one could find you. Doesn’t that feel good? Since so many of us are working as spiritual pioneers for the benefit of others – as a path of service – we require time away from service. And it’s hard not to respond when we see requests from friends and clients sitting in our inboxes and Facebook pages and Twitter feeds and more. Just as we need boundaries with Spirit, we also need boundaries with humans. (Who’da thought?) Set a few boundaries here as well.
Trust me: The inspiration won’t dry up if you spend an afternoon reading old comic strips at the bookstore. Or if you don’t open your email for a day. Or even if you keep your mouth closed when inspiration comes through.
It’s all okay. Respect your humanity, above all, and you’ll continue to be a person whom Spirit seeks as a messenger for the world.

I’ll see your “respect” and raise you a “love and respect”!
I would have given up on the shamanic journeying work if you hadn’t been able to tell me, with total authenticity, that you (YOU???) shared all the same doubts and fears of unworthiness.
From my perspective, your nasty toothy questions were a key factor in allowing me to receive what you teach. I’m allergic to self-appointed gurus who never have doubts. So I send your only-a-mother-could-love ugly questions my love and thanks. And ask them to maybe be a little gentler with the teeth and claws. Velvet paws, guys!!
Thank you for sharing this post. I can begin to accept that my own doubts and bullying gremlin voices may not just be something to love and accept – they may be a valuable part, and I just can’t see the value yet.
Oh, and yay for the reveal!
I love the tip to set boundaries with Spirit!! ha ha
Another great post – thanks for it, Harmony!
Janette, you’re on in the “love and respect” department! I’ll raise you a “cherish,” too! lol
Trust me, I have had all the doubts in the world. All the self-doubt, all the angst, all the inner struggle, all the cr*ppy feelings — you name it, I’ve had it!
And they sometimes still rear up as I emerge into who I am today as a journeyer and a healer and a teacher…
Now, though, I know how to separate from them — and part of doing that is sharing my stories with others so we all see how we’re in this boat together.
Totally lol about the phrase: “only-a-mother-could-love questions.” Thanks for the laughs and thanks for the comment!
Thank you, Jeannette! I always love seeing you here! <3 (Trying to figure out how to get our little Good Vibe U heart pic into a comment…) <3

Actually, inspiration is more likely to WELL UP when you are relaxed and having fun! That’s when the big breakthroughs happens.
Great post and great reminders, Harmony!
Many blessings,
Nancy

You’re right on the money, Nancy (as usual)! Inspiration is much more likely to well up when we’re not trying for it. The more we let go, the more likely inspiration is to show up. That’s why hot baths, long walks, and purring cats are so helpful to this whole inspiration & manifestation process.
Thank you for your great artistic help with reformatting the image on this post! You’re really a gem, and I’m grateful for your skills.
Absolutely brilliant, Harmony, to ask Spirit not to bother me during the middle of the night. Wish I’d thought of that one during my three years of insomnia! I’ll definitely keep it in mind for future reference.
Thanks for the helpful pointers… there’s lots of us Lightworkers and sometimes we just need reminding! I can’t be the only one, right?
Hi! I followed you over here from Ande’s site. Did you say you have synesthesia? I do too. I’ve subscribed to your blog, can’t wait to see what it’s all about! Looks awesome!

Oh Lisa! You’re not alone in this at all. It’s just coming to my attention that many lightworkers are experiencing insomnia, especially before/during/after deep personal initiations — and during times of major global transformation. I’m exploring spiritual techniques to help us get the sleep we need while our spirits do their work in the world. More on that soon.
Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment! May we all have a good night’s rest tonight!
Anna, thank you for dropping by, and thanks for commenting and subscribing to the blog here at Intuitopia! I’m so glad to have you!
I don’t know if I have synesthesia, per se, but it’s something I’ve cultivated an awareness of for the past 15 years or so. A synesthetic awareness can elevate all of our art — and for those of us on the shamanic path, we quickly discover that synesthesia becomes a big part of our journey experience. We can feel colors, taste shapes, and dissolve into elements, much like a poet does, but words are optional.
For anyone who hasn’t been to Ande Waggener’s Up From Splat blog, she just posted a great post on using your senses to increase your pleasure in life:

Oh yes, I know all about that! You might enjoy having a peek at my blog, too – it has both synesthesia and a cute Jewish ghost in it, among other things.

Thanks, Anna! I’ll check it out! (You had me at ghost… hee hee.)
This is a beautiful post, Harmony. I got such a sense of relief from “Or even if you keep your mouth closed when inspiration comes through.” So often I think I have to honor inspiration by taking immediate action, and get really frustrated when I don’t (but inspiration won’t strike again if you don’t listen to it and follow through right away! my inner critic complains). It’s really encouraging to read that I’m not alone in that struggle, and that it’s okay to just not be available sometimes. Thank you!

I just go with the flow of life, and am enjoying it. I worry and I am at times happy, it’s but natural when fear attacks you, but don’t let it smash you, overcome it, go on! This too are made to test our strength when facing this hurdles, life cannot be like a pearl when there is no testing that comes our way. Jump the hurdle and don’t look back.

For you to be respect by others, you must first respect yourself and come to realize the things that can make your life unclear. Be real and open-minded to all things and be the one to make things possible.
